The house has a plaque outside that tells of the legendary girl. The girl had so many suitors but she loved only one man. The problem was that her family did not approve of it because the man she loved was poor. Despite their objections, she crawled out of the window to marry the man in Scotland. Later, the poor man became a lord. Aside from the legend, the Bessie Surtees House features a fascinating period architecture. Blackfriars is another attraction found at the heart of the city. It is located at the North East Civic Trust. This 13th century establishment first served as a friary of Newcastle. After three centuries, the monastery became a home for the needy.
