Canberra is the capital city of Australia. It is unique in being a planned city. It is located between Sydney and Melbourne, as a compromise between Australia's two largest cities. There was a contest for its design, and it relies heavily on the vegetation of the area, which is why it is also called the bush capital. It is built on the shores of an artificial lake (Lake Burley Griffin), which divides central Canberra. The northern side has the city centre, and southern side has parliamentary and embassy buildings. For the longest time, it was mostly populated by politicians and those who worked for the government.
Being the capital city, Canberra is the home of the Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, and many other government departments and agencies. There are also many important social and cultural institutions like the National Gallery of Australia and the National Museum of Australia. Canberra International Airport gets flights in and out from many other Australian capital cities. These airlines fly to Canberra every day: Virgin Blue (from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Adelaide), Qantas (from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth) and Brindabella Airlines (from Newcastle, Traralgon, and Albury-Wodonga). To get to Canberra from other cities, you would first have to fly to one of the above cities. International flights have to first fly to Sydney or Melbourne and then transfer, taking a domestic flight to Canberra. Canberra can also be reached by train, bus, and by car. Once in Canberra, you can visit the Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Museum of Australia. There are also many other things to see and do in Canberra.
