As the economic climate worsens, another airline this morning has gone into operation andgrounded all flights. XL Airways has gone into administration as of 12th September and stated on their website http://www. xl. com/ that all flights have been immediately cancelled and all aircraft grounded. The company was part of a larger ground which has also gone into administration and included: XL Leisure Group Plc, XL Airways UK Limited, Excel Aviation Limited, Explorer House Limited, Aspire Holidays Limited, Freedom Flights Limited, Freedom Flights (Aviation) Limited, The Really Great Holiday Company plc, Medlife Hotels Limited, Travel City Flights Limited, Kosmar Villa Holidays plc. The reason for the airline going into administration was cited as 'having suffered as a result of volatile fuel prices, the economic downturn, and were unable to obtain further funding. ' Holidays booked with the XL Leisure group are ATOL protected BUT those customers who have booked flights with XL Airways will not be eligible for a refund from ATOL. However, if they have bought on a credit card - their bank will be able to provide a refund. The XL website has a more detailed explanation of what people abroad should do. XL Leisure Group was reported to be the third largest holiday travel agent in the UK. When a company of this size goes into administration, its quite worrying for the whole industry. Last week, Zoom Airlines went into administration with over 60,000 booked flights cancelled and thousands of passengers stuck overseas having to find their own way home.
