WiFi hot spots in airport lounges on the increase

Wednesday 03 Sep 2008 8:23am

The number of wireless internet hot spots offered in airport lounges is on the rise. An ever-increasing number of people with laptops and other wireless-ready devices are already benefiting from the free service, according to the Canadian Press. A spokesperson from the New York firm ABI Research Stan Schatt commented: 'Wi-Fi helps make the internet more accessible to people. Once you get to the internet, then you can go look at your email, you can go to websites, you can pretty much do anything. ' According to Hotspot Locations, there are upwards of 33,000 wireless local area network hot spots in airport lounges across the world, with more than 11,000 in the USA and 824 in Canada. This news follows the first Emirates mobile phone-enabled commercial flight to land at Heathrow Airport earlier this month. Other airlines such as Qantas have also tested the AeroMobile technology which uses a weaker signal to carry communications, which does not interfere with aircraft technology.
