German airline Lufthansa has announced that it has launched a service to enable its passengers to use its online check-in and mobile boarding passes on flights from Heathrow Airport. Lufthansa said that the scheme will cover its services to almost 400 destinations in Europe, and comes as the result of its decision that the UK is a 'key launch market' for its mobile boarding pass service. The service will be introduced to other UK and European departure points serviced by Lufthansa over the coming months, already allows customers to check in online and use mobile boarding passes on all of the airline's non-stop flights to Germany as well as to most onward destinations in Europe. The UK launch on Monday followed Lufthansa's introduction of mobile boarding technology to Germany in 2007, covering around 1,000 flights out of the country every day. Lufthansa's general manager in the UK and Ireland Marianne Sammann said: 'Selecting London Heathrow as one of the key launch markets outside Germany for the mobile boarding pass clearly demonstrates just how much we value our UK customers. 'I am sure this new service will prove to be invaluable, particularly to business travellers, making their journeys simpler, more flexible and more convenient. ' In order to use the new system, passengers can check in on Lufthansa's website or on the mobile portal and receive a mobile boarding pass via email or SMS to an internet-enabled mobile phone.
