East Midlands Airport has announced plans to generate a significant proportion of the electricity uses from wind power in an effort to ‘go green'. Under the new plans, wind turbines will be implemented next year. This is an important part of the airport's aim to generate ten per cent of the electricity it consumes from wind power and become carbon neutral by 2012. East Midlands Airport has recently been awarded the Airport of the Year accolade at the TTG Travel Awards and has been recognised for its green policies and environmental awareness before. Big Green Week was celebrated last week by staff at the airport, which involved a programme of events focussing on the environment and making green choices. Big Green Week spokesperson Kelly McHugh said: 'The airport is working hard to make its ground operations carbon neutral by 2012. ' East Midlands airport has also established a 'roadmap of the sky' in another green effort, which directs aircraft away from highly polluted areas, imposing fines for airlines which allow their aircraft to deviate from these specified routes. Any fines collected from the scheme are then used to fund the sound-proofing of homes within a three-mile radius of the airport.
