According to an industry body, the USA remains a value-for-money holiday destination for people from the UK, in spite of the comparative strength of the US dollar. A spokesperson for the Travel Association (ABTA), Sean Tipton, has said that the 'unfavourable exchange rate' does not mean that the USA has become a very expensive country for UK tourists to visit. Mr Tipton highlighted that shopping and eating out are generally cheaper for UK visitors to the USA. Mr Tipton also noted that travelling to a long-haul destination such as the US is not a spur-of-the-moment choice for many people. He therefore suggested that 'negative headlines' and the poor exchange rate should not be factors that influence such a decision very much. The ABTA spokesman went on to reason that it is the cost of flights to the USA that are the main expense, so if people shop around for reasonably-priced flights, the destinations is still very affordable. 'Traditionally speaking, in terms of exchange rate issues, America is regarded as a fairly good value country for people from the UK,' Mr Tipton commented. Travel to the USA by UK residents increased by one per cent in the year period up to August 2008, according to the Office for National Statistics' survey of overseas travel between June and August 2008.
