UKs busiest airports feeling the credit crunch bite

Thursday 06 Nov 2008 10:58am

Declining passenger numbers at the busiest airports in the UK are being blamed on the effects of the credit crunch, according airport operator BAA. London's Stansted Airport saw a 4. 7 per cent decrease in passenger traffic, chiefly due to a drop in European scheduled traffic, while London's Heathrow airport saw an overall 3. 6 per cent drop in passenger numbers, with a significant 8. 1 per cent reduction in European passengers. In Scotland, Edinburgh airport saw a 2. 9 per cent fall in passengers, while Glasgow airport suffered an 11 per cent drop. However, a BAA spokesperson said that the current situation is not a cause for long term concern: 'Historically, air traffic growth recovers from short-term shocks such as those currently being played out in the financial markets, as evidenced by the growth in traffic after the Gulf wars, the September 11 attacks and the Asian economic problems in the late 1990s. ' European Regional Airline Association members have recently reported their slowest period of growth since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
