Dutch national airline KLM has announced plans to expand its services from Liverpool with a new route to Amsterdam in time for its summer 2009 schedule. KLM's new service will see Liverpool Airport connected to more than 100 new destinations across the world via the airlines world network, based in Amsterdam. The expanded three times daily service will be operated by a Fokker 70 aircraft and will get underway on March 29th 2009. Liverpool will become KLM's 15th destination in the UK, with the airline already operating flights from airports such as London Heathrow Airport, Edinburgh Airport, Birmingham Airport. KLM's senior vice president of network operations Pieter Elbers said: 'Being the only major network carrier to include Liverpool in its network, KLM further strengthens its position in the UK, one of the most important markets in the extensive network of KLM. ' A spokesman from the Peel Airports Group, which owns Liverpool Airport, Neil Pakey, said that KLM's new service will provide a 'lasting legacy' for the city's year as Europe's capital of culture. Mr Pakey added: 'KLM's flights will make doing business with international markets in Liverpool much more straightforward and attractive, and for people looking to experience new destinations and cultures across Asia, Africa or the Americas, then KLM's offer at John Lennon Airport will deliver this for Liverpool for the first time. '
