Travellers flying from Heathrow will soon have no need to be concerned about their luggage getting lost because work has just begun on a baggage tunnel. The tunnel will cost an estimated £260 million and will provide a connection between terminals three and five. Airport bosses hope baggage handling will improve with luggage being transported at speeds of 800 meters per minute on an automated system. The baggage tunnel will also be the world's largest integrated baggage system at 1. 8km long. It is hoped that up to 110 million bags a year will be handled by 2012. Project director of BAA's Baggage and Flight Connections, Dr Chris Millard, said: 'This is a highly complex and challenging tunnelling operation that requires absolute precision. ' The new baggage system is part of a £4 billion improvement package at Heathrow that will be completed in stages over the next five years. Travellers using Heathrow's terminal five when it opened famously faced huge disruptions as thousands of bags were mislaid and over 500 flights cancelled.
