A decision was made on Tuesday 22nd May 2007 by the CAA - Civil Aviation Authority - to close the City of Derry Airport due to safety concerns. The closure was due to "systematic failure of safety management" said the CAA. Derry's Airport Manager said the aiport closed due to a CAA audit of the repair work being done at the site. Discussions have been in place between the CAA and airport representatives for some time about safety issues which included poor runway drainage, unsuitable temporary repairs to plane parking areas and also no effective bird control plan. A CAA audit is due to be carried out over the next few days aimed at addressing the CAA's concerns. At the time of writing, no date has been set as to when the aiport might re-open. As no planes are flying, passengers are advised to contact their airline about cancellations or flying from an alternative airport.
