UK low-cost airline bmibaby has claimed that it has seen a considerable increase in bookings for traditional summer sun destinations. From current booking information, the airline has predicted that the top three destinations from East Midlands, Birmingham International, Manchester and Cardiff International Airports will be Malaga, Palma and Faro in Portugal. bmibaby has recorded a huge number of visitors to its website simply searching for travel to summer sun destinations, suggesting that people are thinking about booking their sunshine escape soon. Tracking statistics for Google show that over 1. 3 million people searched for flights to the Algarve, Alicante, Barcelona and Malaga during February, compared to just 87,500 in January. bmibaby's research has also found that Alicante the most searched-for European destination on Google in February 2009, while Edinburgh occupied that same position in January and Alicante did not even feature in the top ten destinations. The airline's website also experienced a massive increase in users viewing their Mediterranean destination guides. Viewings of the guide for Alicante jumped by 160%, while the Faro guide saw a 172% rise for the week ending 22 February 2009 compared to week ending 25 January. As a result of the recent escalation in customer demand for flights to the Mediterranean, bmibaby announced that it will operate an additional 30 flights per week to its most popular sunny destinations.
