Budget airlines in the US are offering large discounts on airfares for travel during the peak summer season. The move to offer unusually large discounts during what is usually the busiest period of the year is an unprecedented move that indicates that the demand for air travel is on the wane. Las Vegas bases airline, Southwest Airlines, has reduced return airfares by an average of $70 on domestic flights for travel until June 24. One-way fares are being offered for as little as $49, according to the airline. Southwest's fare sale even includes services to popular vacation destinations such as Florida. The current fare discounts mark the first time that Southwest Airlines has reduced airfares to normally popular destinations in 2009. Travel experts have highlighted that it is very unusual to see wide-ranging airfare sales for travel during the summer travel season because it is during the summer season that fares typically soar as demand for air travel increases. Budget airline AirTran Airways has extended its fare sale to cover travel up to 4 November. One-way fares for flights from Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, to Orlando, Florida, start from $84, while fares as low as $39 are available on other routes. Tom Parsons, the chief executive of Bestfares. com, an online travel firm based in Texas, commented: 'I cannot remember the last time that an airline has given us this many travel days for a single airfare sale'. Many major airlines in the US, including American Airlines, are choosing to match sale prices on routes where they are in direct competition.
