From May, the budget airline Ryanair will double its current charges for its airport check-in service to £20 per person, in its plans to remove the service altogether. Ryaniar will cease to offer airport check-in at any airport from 1st October 2009. There will be three different phases to the planned check-in changes. Phase one was rolled-out on 19th March, and saw Ryanair's check-in service made available to passengers who are not EU/EEA citizens, to those travelling with checked baggage and anyone with reduced mobility. Passengers who use online check-in and have hand luggage only will not incur a fee, while any passengers who have additional bags to check will be liable for a check-in fee of £5 per person. Passengers wishing to use check-in facilities at the airport will incur an additional £10 charge per person, per flight, when they book their flights. Phase two will start on 1st May, when all new bookings will require customers to use online check-in. Ryanair's airport check-in desks will be phased out from May 1st to the end of the summer. During this time, fees for using airport check-in will increase to £20 per person to try to discourage passengers from using the service. When phase three starts on 1st October, there will no longer be Ryanair check-in desks at the airport so customers will have to use online check-in. Passengers who have checked bags online will use airport ‘bag drop' desks.
