A new route between Birmingham International Airport and India will commence early next month. From April 4th, passengers from Birmingham International Airport will be able to fly direct to Amritsar, a city in northern India. This will be the airport's first service to the city, complimenting its existing schedule of flights to other parts of India. A new Indian airline called Akal Air will operate this new twice weekly service, which will be served by a 228-seat Boeing 757 200. Akal Air's managing director, Daljit Singh Birring, said that the new service would be particularly popular with the West Midlands' Asian communities. Mr Birring added: 'Birmingham is the perfect base for Akal Air. Access to Amritsar is of huge importance to the large Punjabi and Sikh population of the Midlands taking the pilgrimage to the Golden Temple and visiting family and friends, as well as for business people trading with India's emerging and developing economy. ' He went on to say that the quality of Akal Air's service will ensure its success, in spite of the difficult economic climate that has seen very few new airlines launched, and several existing airlines go into administration.
