Increase in air travellers visiting friends and relatives
Statistics have revealed that there has been a substantial increase in the number of passengers travelling through UK airports to visit friends and relatives. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has calculated that, in 2007, nearly one out of every three passengers travelling to and from the UK did so to visit family and friends. This contributed to an increase in the number of flights taken to see family and friends of more than 75 per cent, with many travellers choosing to stay in airport hotels. Overall, the total number of air trips has increased by a third, with the proportion of people using air travel to visit friends or family growing at a faster rate than international holiday traffic. Director of economic regulation of the CAA group, Dr Harry Bush, said: 'Today, more UK residents than ever before are likely to have friends or relatives overseas – and more people overseas have links into the UK. 'Air travel has played a key role in enabling this development, principally through deregulation of aviation and the subsequent emergence of low-cost air travel with more point-to-point routings. ' The CAA has also strongly suggested that customers should be one of the aviation industry's highest priorities.
