German low cost airline Germanwings will introduce new charges for excess baggage from 29 March. The introduction of the new charges coincides with changes in the stated maximum free baggage weight. The amount that any baggage exceeds this weight is considered to be excess baggage. Germanwings customers currently pay an excess baggage charge of 7 Euros for each kilogram over 23kg. As of 29 March, excess baggage fees will be charged for weights exceeding 20kg. The new charges for weights above 20kg but between 20-30kg will be fixed at 20 Euros. If baggage weighs more than 30kg, passengers will face an 8 Euro per additional kilo according to the new tariff. This new fee structure could lead to substantial savings to many passengers. From 29 March, passengers carrying baggage weighing more than 23kg stand to make savings, with those carrying 30 kg saving up to 50 Euros. It is possible for Germanwings customers who plan to book flights for travel from 29 March to report their excess baggage at the time booking (if the excess baggage is expected) and pay in advance via the internet or the Germanwings telephone service. Passengers who choose to pay for their excess baggage in advance will be able to make additional savings. Customers will be charged 40 Euros if they choose to pay for their excess baggage at the airport. The regular surcharge per bag remains unchanged at 5 Euros.
