Cardiff Airport has announced that work is due to start on planned works to improve its terminal building in October. The development work will begin with an overhaul of the airport terminal and approach areas, followed by a scheme to link existing arrivals and departures halls into a sizeable shared zone. Passengers will also enjoy a selection of new food and retail services, along with a generally more modern design to the airport. The first phase of Cardiff Airport's programme of redevelopment is expected to be completed in time for summer 2010. This means that the first phase will be finished before the Ryder Cup, which will be hosted in Newport, south Wales next October. Cardiff Airport managing director, Patrick Duffy, said: 'These plans demonstrate the airport's commitment to being part of a wider strategy for Wales. 'We want to see our facilities being used by more airlines offering more choice to both Welsh patrons and visitors to Wales. ' Cardiff Airport will see its international network increase when KLM launches a new programme of flights to Calgary, Canada via connections from its base in Amsterdam this summer.
