New research has suggested that the credit crunch-inspired trend for holidaymakers scouring the internet for the cheapest deals could see online travel sites experience their busiest year ever. eDigitalResearch and the Interactive Media in Retail Group conducted a major customer survey as part of the research and concluded that people will 'flock to travel websites' throughout 2009. 57 per cent of the survey's respondents said that they will not forego their current travel plans as a result of the credit crunch, but will look for more affordable holiday deals online to reduce costs instead. 47 per cent of respondents said that they hoped to spend less on their holidays in 2009, while 58 per cent said that price was the main influencing factor when deciding which companies to book with. Director of eDigitalResearch, Michelle Fuller, said: 'It is clear that online travel retailers have an amazing opportunity ahead of them this year. 'As travel companies offer increasingly competitive deals online, more and more people are relying on the internet, not for just background research, but to book their holidays. ' Egypt, Croatia and Turkey are among the destinations hotly-tipped to prove popular with travelling Brits this year because they are outside the eurozone and so offer a better currency exchange rate, while not being long haul destinations.
