According to official figures released today, Manchester Airport handled over 22. 4 million visitors in 2006 - a small increase of 40,000 compared to 2005. For another year, the airport is the busiest outside of London based airports. Liverpool Airport handled 500,000 more passengers in 2006 - an increase of just over 13%. It was the airport with the biggest growth in the UK compared with 2005. Regional airports such as Manchester and Liverpool continue to grow faster with many low cost airlines contributing to the increase in passenger numbers. Regional airports grew by an average of four percent in 2006. However, London based airports grew only by an average of 3% in 2006. Overall, airports across the England, Scotland and Wales handled over 235 million passengers in 2006 - almost 4 times the number of people in the UK.
