Bournemouth Airport appears at position 9 in the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) league of fastest growing airports. Passenger numbers grew by 127,000 to 964,000 visitors in 2006 - with initial estimates for 2007 taking it over 1 million passengers. The increase in passengers came from various areas, including new routes by budget carriers Easyet, Air Berlin and Ryanair. Spanish holiday destinations (with cheap holiday flights) proved popular with travellers and there were also additional charter flights from Thomas Cook. Although mainly a passenger airport, freight still flies in and out of the airport. Freight figures for the airport were down 11% on the previous year.
