Efforts are in progress to restore commercial air links between London and Baghdad. Executives from UK-based bmi have been meeting with senior officials from the Iraqi government to establish that the airline was 'ready and willing' to operate flights between the two capitals. The meeting happened while delegates representing 300 businesses with Iraqi interests attended a forum in London to discuss direct investment in Iraq, which was also attended by the prime minister of Iraq, Nouri al-Malikiand and the UK business minister, Lord Mandleson. Bmi's CEO, Nigel Turner, highlighted that the airline would not able to begin operations until UK regulators grant permission for British carriers to fly to Iraq. Mr Turner said: 'Nevertheless, I have told Iraqi officials and business that subject to the required levels of operational integrity and safety being satisfactorily achieved and appropriate governmental approval, bmi is ready and willing to once again re-establish air links between Heathrow and Baghdad. ' Mr Turner added: 'I have handed a letter to Iraq's transport minister Amr Abduljabber Ismail and told him that we recognise the considerable efforts that are being made to get business and commerce between our two countries to develop and grow.
