London's Stansted Airport has unveiled the first stage of its new airport expansion which is part of a £50 million investment in the airport. The changes are geared around improving the facilities for passengers with over 6,000 square metres of space added for arriving passengers, an extra desk at immigration control and a sixth baggage reclaim belt. The next phase of the expansion is scheduled to be unveiled in December where new transport facilities, improved pickup/drop off areas and more shops will be amongst the changes. Stansted is one of the UKs busiest airports with over 3,300 passengers arriving each hour at peak times. It also has plans to increase passenger numbers to 35 million a year by 2015 and has submitted plans for a second runway. The new airport expansion is seen as key to being able to handle, and accommodate a large number of passengers which will be needed as passenger numbers continue to grow.
