Passenger numbers have been announced for Dubai Airport for the first six months of the year and almost 18. 5 million people travelled through the airport inthe period. The figures are a 13. 5% increase in the same time last year. The figures equate to almost 100,000 passengers travelling through the airport each day - or 3 million per month. Although not the busiest airport in the world, Dubai is the fastest growing in the world. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai's Civil Aviation Authority and chairman of Dubai Airports, said: 'Dubai International is the main gateway to the city of Dubai which is recognised as a global commerce and tourism hub. The growth of the city and that of the airport are entwined in a directly proportional relationship. ' The massive Al Maktoum International Airport airport is currently being built in Dubai which is 10 times the site of Dubai Airport and is due to open in 2017 and will be the world's largest airport for both passengers and cargo.
