ACI, the Airports Council International based in Geneva has today released traffic figures for 2006 - covering the 1640 airports operated by its members. The airports in 178 countries show increase growth with: - passenger numbers for 2006 reaching 4. 4 Billion; an increase of 4. 8% compared to passenger number in 2005. - 85. 6 million tonnes of cargo were flown - up 3. 6% compared to 2005. - Atlanta Airport in the United States was again the busiest airport with over 85 million people travelling through it. - 2nd busiest was Chicago O'Hare Airport with 77 million people travelling through it. - 3rd busiest was London Heathrow with 67. 4 million people travelling through it. Although traffic numbers are up, over 75% of airports worldwide reported passenger growth. The ACI covers 1640 airports across the world, including everything from big international airports such as London Heathrow or London Gatwick, down to smaller airports handling purely domestic flights.
