Mexican airline Mexicana has announced the launch of a new direct flight service from London Gatwick Airport to Mexico City. The new flights will operate from London twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays starting from 18th January. Additional flights to create a four times weekly service will begin operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 18th February. To start with, flights will depart from Gatwick Airport at 1030 hrs, to arrive in Mexico City at 1735 hrs. Return flights from Mexico City will depart at 1430 hrs, arriving at Gatwick Airport at 0725 hrs the following morning. The new flights will be served by a Boeing 767-200 aircraft, which offers seating for up to 156 passengers: 116 in economy class, and 40 in Clase Ejecutiva business class. The London – Mexico City route marks Mexicana's first transatlantic service, as well as its first service to Europe. Mexicana claims to be responding to an identified demand for a wider choice of flights between the two destinations on both sides of the Atlantic, and will introduce the service as part of its plans for expansion. The planned times of the new flights have been designed to make connections to many of Mexicana's domestic destinations– including Cancun, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Puerto Vallarta – along with destinations in Central and South America including Buenos Aires and Guatemala City, more convenient. Mexicana, with its newly expanded flight network, plans to join the Oneworld airline alliance next year.
