Dutch airline KLM has announced that it is to launch a new service from Amsterdam to the Canadian city of Calgary, offering air travellers a greater choice of connecting flights to Canada over the summer 2009 season. KLM plan to begin a direct scheduled service to Calgary, a scenic and popular tourist Canadian destination in the Rocky mountains, from May 3rd 2009. Calgary is also an important location for business travel because it is situated at the heart of Canada's oil and energy markets. Peter Hartman, KLM's president and chief executive, said: 'Under the present economic situation, it's even more important to choose destinations that meet a strong demand. 'By introducing Calgary to our network, we further enhance our product offer to our customers, who can now reach this important region in Canada on a direct flight from Amsterdam. ' KLM currently operates flights between Europe and North America with as a joint venture with its partner carrier, Northwest Airlines, which is a subsidiary of Delta Airlines. Travellers from the UK will be able to access KLM's new Calgary connection by first flying to the airline's Amsterdam base from a range of airports including Gatwick Airport, Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport.
