Luton Airport has reported that the passenger traffic figures it has recorded for the first nine months of 2008 show that it has the highest rate of passenger growth in the country. The statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority confirm that Luton Airport saw a year on year increase of 6. 5 per cent between January and September this year compared to 2007 figures. The airport has handled 487,311 additional passengers than in the last year. Luton's passenger growth has been partly attributed to the launch of new flight routes to destinations in Jersey, Poland, Italy and Cyprus. Managing director of Luton Airport Glyn Jones said: 'We have achieved this position due to our excellent transport links to London, the south-east and the Midlands as well as having one of the best airport catchment areas in the UK. 'This has been an encouraging year for us and shows just how attractive London Luton Airport now is to airlines and travellers alike. ' Luton airport is currently London's fourth largest airport, and was ranked the fifth busiest airport in 2007. A whole range of airlines serve the hub, including Aer Arann, easyJet and Flybe, and fly to more than 95 locations across Europe and further afield. The hub saw nearly ten million passengers last year, marking passenger growth of nearly 400 per cent over the decade 1997 to 2007.
