The Daily Telegraph has ranked the ‘fall and rise' of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 from an opening fraught with problems, to its current success, as number four in its top ten list of travel and tourism events of 2008. The dedicated British Airways gateway is now considered to have 'finally found its feet' according to the newspaper. The airline's recent announcement that it has achieved its best punctuality rates from Heathrow Airport in a decade was widely attributed to the successful running of the new terminal. The Telegraph's recent survey of its readers found that 80 per cent of respondents who had used Terminal 5 since its opening had enjoyed a positive travel experience. More than 13 million customers have flown to and from the high-tech terminal, with some 95,000 flights having departed and arrived since March. ‘The rise and rise of the Middle East' also made the Telegraph's 2008 list, as a result of Dubai's successful expansions in air travel and tourism, particularly Dubai airport's new Terminal 3 building and the opening of the Atlantis resort. However, Dubai is not the only Middle Eastern country to have had its profile boosted on the international stage this year; Egypt, Oman and Qatar have also benefitted from increases and improvements in the number of routes and flights from the West. Other events that feature in the list are the introduction of the Airbus A380 to Britain by Singapore Airlines', and Emirates being the first airline to lift the ban on making mobile phone calls during flights.
