Following our earlier story that bmi had abandoned short-haul fuel surcharges, British Airways announced reductions in its fuel surcharges, which came into effect on December 18th. BA will reduce its fuel surcharge by up to a third on long-haul journeys. The move has been made possible by the airline's fuel hedging policy for 2009-10 and the recent falls in the price of oil. BA's World Traveller cabin passengers will now pay a £66 surcharge on flights lasting over nine hours, a reduction of £30. Shorter journeys will now carry a surcharge of £53, down from £68. World Traveller Plus flights of nine hours or more will incur a charge of £85, and a £63 surcharge on flights shorter than nine hours. Charges for First and Club World services will fall by £35 to £98 on flights more than nine hours long, while charges on shorter flights will see a £20 cut to £78. Fuel surcharges for Domestic and European travellers will now be £12, while Club Europe passengers will pay £15. The changes came into service as British Airways prepared to carry some 1. 6 million passengers during the peak Christmas travel period from December 17th to January 4th.
