Bmi successful mobile boarding pass trial

Bmi has claimed its mobile boarding pass trial as a triumph, bringing paperless boarding passes one step closer to be universally used. Bmi was the first British carrier to introduce mobile boarding passes for some of its services as part of a trial programme earlier this year. A bmi spokesperson has confirmed that the initial trials were a success and that the airline is set to announce future plans for expansion of the technology over the next few weeks. The mobile boarding pass service was available to passengers flying on domestic routes to London Heathrow Airport from Edinburgh Airport and Manchester Airport, and on flights each way between Belfast City Airport and Heathrow during the trial period. The system sends a barcode to a passenger's mobile phone or PDA in a message containing full flight details, the same information normally printed on a standard paper boarding pass. The text message barcode will be scanned as normal by a member of staff at the security gate. The mobile boarding pass system is designed as a way to reduce delays and increase efficiency at airports. The success of bmi's recent trials have come after the announcement that German airline Lufthansa has purchased a controlling stake in Bmi.
