British airline Bmi has announced plans to launch a new series of flights from London's Heathrow Airport to the Ukraine's capital city, Kiev. Bmi is the second largest airline based at Heathrow Airport, after British Airways, and will operate five return flights weekly to Kiev. The new Kiev service will bring new competition to the route and deliver 'a wide range of benefits' to business and leisure passengers, according to bmi. The new flights were made possible by a new air services agreement between the UK and Ukraine governments and received approval from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which met to address the issue of low air travel capacity between the two countries. Bmi group chief executive officer, Nigel Turner, claimed the CAA's decision to grant bmi permission to operate on the route would give consumers more benefits than if it had opted to provide British Airways, the route's sole carrier, with greater capacity. Mr Turner added: 'A new competitive service from bmi will not only be a boon for point-to-point travellers between Heathrow and Kiev, but will also provide a wide range of connecting services at Heathrow onto bmi domestic services as well as flights of Star Alliance partner airlines. ' Bmi plans to reveal further details regarding details for the new route in the near future.
