Midlands based Birmingham Airport saw the busiest December ever with a total of 587,760 passengers travelling through the airport in the christmas month with an increase of 2. 6% compared to the previous December. This brings the total number of passengers using the airport to 9. 23 million in 2007. Flights within Europe are proving particulary popular with an increase of 8. 7% in December. The airport's acting Managing Director said [quote] "Birmingham International Airport has experienced an incredible year, with lots of highs and some lows but we're really pleased to have ended 2007 with record numbers of passengers in December and an increase overall during the 12 months. " "We've welcomed new airlines and introduced new destinations for our region's leisure and business travellers, and have opened our new extended Terminal 1 departures lounge, significantly increasing facilities for the comfort and experience of our passengers. " Ryanair's recent announcement of 20 new routes being added later this year from the airport and the airline establishing its 25th base at Birmingham Airport (including generating 5000 jobs) is sure to see the airport having another record breaking year.
