London Luton Airport - which is quite a distance outside of the centre of London - has reported that 10 million people passed through the airport in 2007. In its 70 year history, the airport has seen consistent growth, particular since the mid to late 1990s when cheap flight airline easyJet started its operations from the airport. An increasing number of airlines are flying from the airport and over 40 new destinations were started in 2007 - both factors helping to boost passenger numbers. Although many budget airlines fly from the airport which offers attractive low costs for aircraft landing and taking off, the airport has also become the base of Business Class only airline, Silverjet. The airline flies twice a day to New York with a business-class only service from its private terminal at the airport. It also has a daily flight to Dubai with increase frequency and new routes expected to start later in the year. In a statement, the airport said [quote] "Luton Airport, managed by TBI, has multiplied its passenger traffic by five in the last decade and is one of the most important airports in Great Britain in number of passengers and routes in service". The airport is expected to see even more passengers having passed through the airport in 2008 with several new destinations planned to start during the year. Luton Airport is owned by TBI.
