Over half million people travelled through Birmingham Airport in January

Wednesday 20 Feb 2008 8:17am

Birmingham Airport has reported that 576,130 people travelled through the airport in January 2008 - a slight fall of 0. 1% compared to previous year. The airport's acting Managing Director, Joe Kelly, said that although there was a slight drop compared to the previous year, the airport has received fantastic news in January that Ryanair will open a base at the airport and fly 20 new routes from the airport to destinations across Europe. He said [quote] "This is excellent news for the airport and the region giving passengers the convenience and choice of flying from their local airport to these destinations. " Destinations from Birmingham that saw growth include non-EU routes (up 6. 3%), Ireland (up 9. 5%) and Channel Islands (up 11. 9%). Several new routes saw passenger numbers increase dramatically including Barcelona, Geneva and Arrecife. Birmingham Airport is the biggest airport outside of London in the UK with airlines flying both long and short haul flights across the Atlantic, east to Asia and "locally" to Europe.
