At Heathrow Airport in London, airport operator BAA has started a new baggage tracking trial with Emirates. Each item of luggage has an RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) tag attached which allows the item to be monitored at every step of its journey. Each RFID tag has a microchip within it which contains the travellers name and what route they are flying. Sensors on the airport's baggage handling system will read the microchips as the luggage moves through the system. A very fancy feature is that passengers can opt to receive a text message on their mobile phones when their luggage gets onto the baggage reclaim belt! Vic Sheppard from Emirates said [quote] "This trial enables us to embrace the latest technology for the benefit of our customers. The volume of baggage processed at airports is increasing with more people around the world flying each year. " Dubai Airport is also taking part of the trial allowing all luggage on Emirates flights to be tracked between the two airports. Its expected that over 50,000 pieces of luggage will be included in the trial.
