UK airline BMI are to lease two new Boeing 757 aircraft in order to improve some of its flights from London's Heathrow Airport. The new aircraft will reduce the need for stops on some journeys - reducing some flight times to, for example, Sierra Leone, by one and a half hours - and being able to offer an additional flight each week to the African country. From 1st May, non-stop flights will operate by BMI to Freetown in Sierra Leone and also to Almaty in Kazakhstan. Nigel Turner from BMI said [quote] "We strongly believe that in order to continue the development of the mid-haul network, now is the time to upgrade capacity and the aircraft range on certain routes that will clearly benefit from non-stop services". BMi have Airbus 330s on order, but leasing the Boeing 757 aircraft allows the airline to make near-term improvements to its service. The airline's London to Tel Aviv route announced in December 2007 has received a tremendous response.
