Based in the Midlands of the UK, Birmingham Airport has announced a "masterplan" for its development over the coming years. The UK Government wants the airline industry to do more for the environment including meeting its own environmental costs and initiatives. Part of the masterplan is to extend the existing runway by 405 metres which will allow bigger aircraft to use the airport and to fly to more long-haul destinations. Although the airport has good motorway connections with it being a few miles from the M42 motorway, the airport plans by 2012 to have up to 25% of people travelling to the airport on public transport. Birmingham Airport is one of the biggest employers in the region and is expected to plan an increasingly important run in supporting growth in the region through international links.
