BAA is the UK's biggest airport operator with seven of the major airports in the UK including Heathrow and Gatwick. Workers at BAA have voted for industrial action with a 2-1 majority - over protecting their final salary pension scheme. The affected airports are: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. BAA workers include staff in all area of the airports from firefighters to security to maintenance to clerical staff to administration. The strike will take place on 7th January 2008 from 6am for a 24 hour period. On 14th January 2008, a further 24 hour strike is planned and on 17th January 2008, a 48 hour strike is planned. It is not clear yet what the extent of cancellations on flights and passengers will be, but it is expected that widespread cancellations will be in place affecting the majority of flights on those days. Airports now owned by BAA such as Birmingham or Luton or Manchester airports will not be affected.
