Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and consists of many little islands connected by bridges. The city is stunning, with a mix of old fairy-tale architecture, sparkling blue waterways and green parks. People who live in Stockholm consider it the capital of Scandinavia, and for good reason. The city exudes a feeling of decadence, modernity and sophistication without appearing stuffy. Because of this, and the availability of affordable flights, Stockholm has become a popular destination for people interested in city breaks. Airports The main airport for Stockholm is Stockholm Arlanda and is located 45 km north of the city. Around 80 airlines from more than 160 destinations serve the airport. Most major airlines fly from JFK Airport to Stockholm, while both Continental and SAS fly from Newark. There is also another airport 8 km west of the city called Bromma Airport which is used primarily for domestic flights. Skavsta Airport is 100 km away and is used for domestic flights and some low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Wizz Air. Västerås Airport is also 100 km away from the city and is used primarily by Ryanair. Getting Around From Arlanda, you can take the Arlanda Express train which leaves from the lower level of each terminal and arrives at the Stockholm Central Station 20 minutes after departure. You can also choose to take an airport coach or taxi which takes approximately 40 minutes to get to the center of Stockholm. Once you are in the city, getting around is very easy due to the great mass transportation options available. You can choose to get around by the underground trains, buses, ferries, trams and commuter trains. You might also consider hiring a bike and riding through the city along the major cycle paths. When to Go Despite its northern location, the temperatures in Stockholm are fairly mild year round. In the summer, the temperature ranges from 68 – 77f with long, sunshine-filled days. The winter is also a nice time to visit, when the city becomes blanketed in snowfall. Temperatures in the winter range from 26 – 38f. To Do The island of Djurgarden is a lovely, must see trip. It is home to some of the city’s most popular attractions including an old organic garden at Rosendal Palace. Another place not to miss is Gamla Stan, which is the Old City. It is one of the best preserved medieval city centers and is full of antique stores, cafes and art galleries. Later, take a wander through Ostermalm to see rows of lovely Renaissance buildings on the waterfront, eat at exclusive restaurants, visit museums and shop at high-end stores. Stockholm is a lovely city to visit during both the summer and winter months. It has become a popular place for people who enjoy the contemporary foods and experiences of new cities but also like the charm of the old city and its lovely architecture. Getting to Stockholm is also very easy, with flights available from all major airports year-round.
