The largest global carrier, Delta Air Lines, revealed that it would be scaling back plans to introduce a $50 fee on second checked bags on international services, as a number of its competitors failed to apply a similar charge. The carrier noted that the new fee will come into force only on flights between the US and Europe. When Delta first announced the move on April 21, it indicated that the new fee would apply to all international flights. 'We constantly monitor the industry landscape to ensure our fares and fees are competitive,' said the airlines spokeswoman Betsy Talton, in a statement. Delta said when it introduced the fee it expected that it would generate $100 million annually. Revised figures were not provided following the scaling back. The bag fee will come into effect on flights from July 1. On all of the airline's international flights, one bag can still be checked for free. Premium-class passengers, frequent fliers in the Elite program, and active military personnel are exempt from the fee on Delta flights between the two continents. The airline and most of its rivals already levy fees for both first and second checked bags on US domestic flights.
