European Health Insurance Cards are no substitute for Travel Insurance

Thursday 07 Aug 2008 11:57am

Holiday makers are being warned that the European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) covers UK holiday makers for medical assistance - but they are not and do not provide travellers with travel insurance. In a report from American Express, over 2. 3 million UK travellers thought that the EHIC was enough cover and didn't take out any travel insurance. Free or reduced healthcare are the only things covered by the EHIC, but it does not cover aspects such as holiday cancellation or curtailment which travel insurance does. American Express insurance services said 'With so many Brits planning a summer holiday in Europe this month, travellers should be careful not to rely on European Health Insurance Cards. They are not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance so you will not be covered for delays, loss of baggage or cancellations or experience other benefits of having an independent travel insurance policy'. British holiday makers still favor Spain as the most popular destination despite the strong Euro.
