It has been estimated that 60 million fewer seats will be available on flights worldwide this winter as airlines struggle to cut costs and remain competitive during the economic downturn. British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair have already announced that they will be running reduced services on a range of routes, while US airlines American Airlines and Continental Airlines have also curtailed passenger capacity. In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, Chris Tarry, a consultant in the airline industry confirmed that further reduced services are expected in 2009. 'I don't think we have seen all the likely capacity adjustments at this stage. For airlines, 2009 is going to be even more difficult than 2008. ' British Airways' chief executive Willie Walsh commented that the travel industry is facing 'its worst trading environment' in history, after revealing BA's plans to reduce its winter flight passenger capacity by 3. 1 per cent on 2007. BA saw its first quarter pre-tax profits dive by 88 per cent.
