The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has released figures indicating that the punctuality of flights at ten of the UK's busiest airports improved during the final quarter of 2008. Around 77 per cent of all flights were within 15 minutes of their scheduled departure and/or arrival times between October and December last year, demonstrating an eight per cent improvement compared to the same time in 2007. London's Heathrow Airport reduced its average delays by seven minutes to 14 minutes, while its overall scheduled punctuality improved by 13 per cent in the quarter. Gatwick Airport and London City Airport increased their punctuality performance by nine per cent and 16 per cent, respectively, contributing to an overall improvement across London airports of ten per cent. Edinburgh Airport recorded the most impressive figures of all the airports from the survey period, achieving a scheduled punctuality rate of 83 per cent. Domestic flights to Cardiff enjoyed an 88 per cent punctuality rate, which was the highest to any destination from UK airports, while services to Shannon Airport showed the shortest average delay of seven minutes. In other news, the CAA recently revealed figures indicating that the number of travellers flying in and out of the UK to visit friends and relatives increased by more than 75 per cent in the period between 2000 and 2007.
