The Tourism Office of Israel has announced tourist figures for January and February 2008 which show a 50% increase in tourists to over 380,000 in the two months. The rise is attributed in the main to an increase in the number of airlines flying to the country and making it more accessible to travellers. UK travellers have recently been able to take advantage of new routes from both bmi and Thomsonfly. Thomsonfly operates from Manchester to Tel Aviv in Israel and bmi provide a daily non-stop service from Heathrow to Tel Aviv. Mr. Gafni from the Israel Tourist Board said in a statement [quote] "We are excited to see that Britons continue to be fascinated by Israel and that more and more of them are now able to experience it for themselves. Traditionally, travel to Israel has not always been as convenient as it could have been, however new travel options mean that the country has now opened up to the everyday tourist and with flight times of just five hours, there couldn't be a better time to visit".
