British Airways have delayed by several months the move of their remaining flights to Heathrow's Terminal 5. The new Terminal which opened at the end of March has encountered many teething problems with baggage handling, security and check-in. Several hundred flights were cancelled as a result and the backlog of lost baggage (over 20,000 items) is still being cleared. All of British Airways flights from Heathrow's Terminal 4 were due to change over to Terminal 5 from 30th April. BA's boss, Willie Walsh said [quote] "It is only sensible to ensure that Terminal 5 is operating consistently at a high standard before the move begins". The delayed move affects over 50 other airlines in other terminals at Heathrow - including Air France, Delta Airlines and Continental Airlines. bmi who are also affected said that the delay was "outrageous and inconsiderate". No definitive date in June has been given on when the remaining flights will move to Terminal 5. With the delayed move, its expected that the biggest problem could be with passengers transferring between short-haul and long-haul flights. The flight schedules of BA over the summer at Heathrow have been based on passengers flying out of Terminal 5. Passengers on short-haul flights may arrive at Terminal 4 and by the time they transfer to Terminal 5, they would have missing the connecting flight and may have to wait 6+ hours for the next flight. Passengers whose flights were due to depart from Terminal 5, but will now depart from Terminal 4 will be contacted by British Airways.
