After changing its name from Teeside International Airport in September 2004, Durham Tees Valley Airport is growing with double digit growth each year. In January 2006, work began on a £1.3 million revamp of the frontage of the airport terminal, bringing the terminal and its facilities up to high quality - inline with similarly sized airports in the country. The airport (which is in Tony Blair's constituency is currently in a £56 million expansion plan which was approved by local councils in December 2006. These plans include extending the terminal, adding improved baggage handling capabilities, improving the check-in areas and through into the departure lounges will be more and better restaurants and retail facilities. Having handled over 900,000 passengers in both 2005 and 2006, the introduction of cheap flights airlines such as Wizz Air and Flyglobespan will increase passenger numbers further in future years.
