It is a magnificent city to visit, whether for a short break, or a longer time, in order to soak up the ambience and atmosphere for which it is so internationally renowned. The first mention of Geneva is when the Romans settled it in around the year 120 B.C and since then it has always been a place of political atmosphere, influence and even religious conflict. This history which is so long and proud, has resulted in a city which is today very aware and proud of its past, but which is keen to embrace the 21st Century. Transport within Geneva is excellent, with the Cointrin airport nearby as well as first class rail connections, basically to the whole of Europe. The internal public transport is also of typical Swiss efficiency, with buses, trams and trolleybuses all running frequently and on time. They are also very clean and easy to navigate, which makes Geneva the perfect place to fly to and then use public transport to see the city at your leisure.
One of the main attractions in Geneva is the headquarters of the European Branch of the United Nations, which is a reminder of how politics have always shaped this city. Although it is not the capital city of Switzerland, with that title going to Zurich, it is the home for the world's most prestigious international organization and the gold murals in the Council Chamber attest to the elevated position in which Geneva is still held today. When here, you will be spoilt for choice with what to see and do. The architecture is simply stunning, with buildings of historical importance littered throughout the old town in particular, but also with some fascinating modern architecture which embraces all that is good about modern design. There are also some simply beautiful old cathedrals and churches, which are a testament to the historical significance which Geneva had with regard to religion. Time should also be taken taking a trip to Rousseau Island, which is named after the famous son of the city, the philosopher, Jean-Jacque Rousseau. This is a very romantic and serene island, set in the midst of the Le Rhone River. But the views of the City are simply awesome and offer the perfect photo opportunities, as well as the basis for some very romantic walks. Although Geneva is very compact and has less than 200,000 residents within the city limits, it is so rich in terms of its facilities and there is plenty of entertainment and things to do. But be warned, in Geneva food is a passion and you will find over 1,000 restaurants here, all keen to tempt you in to sample the delights of the gourmet capital of Switzerland.
