Stuttgart is a very interesting city to visit. As the capital of Baden-Wurttemberrg, it is one of the most influential cities in southern Germany and having been founded as early as 950 AD it has enjoyed being a centre for commerce and trade for many centuries. Now its economy is based on technology and the motor industry with Porsches and Mercedes Benz cars all produced here, or in the locality. This gives the city a really affluent edge, which is reflected in some of the high class shops which are prevalent in Stuttgart, some fantastic restaurants, as well as the culture on offer, which is almost unrivalled throughout southern Germany.
The Staatstheater and the Staatsgallerie are two of the most important cultural icons in the city. The theatre boasts an opera house and 3 small theatres, offering a wide range of performances. In addition there are two musical theatres which house almost 2000 people. But if beer and nightlife is more to your taste, then you will not be disappointed. Stuttgart is renowned for its cuisine, which is known as Swabian and this is not for the calorie conscious, but it is delicious. Wine is produced in the area and beer is also plentiful which results in lots of bars and cafes, to sample the various beers or wines. Around the end of September the city is home to the famous Beer Festival, which is a real treat for beer lovers and is beaten only by the Munich Beer Festival in terms of its size and scale. Getting to Stuttgart is easy, since it has its own airport. Flybe, British Airways and Lufthansa amongst others all offer regular flights.
