Hamburg is the second biggest city in Germany and is a very cosmopolitan city, perhaps through its position on the Jutland Peninsula, acting as a bridge between Europe and Scandinavia. It has long been an international city for trade and this also has influenced Hamburg in the sense that it is a city which looks outward and is very welcoming to people from overseas. It is also a city with a very strong and rich history, which is reflected in the architecture and the sights. The skyline is dominated by the sight of five churches, with their spires all striving to the heavens. Some of these Churches date back to medieval times and so they are well worth a visit.
It is also a city which is linked by bridges, with over 2300 of them spanning the canals along the city. It actually has more bridges than any other town or city: including Amsterdam. The townhall, known locally as the Rathaus, is also a building of special architectural interest and there are plenty of museums and art galleries to excite even those who generally aren't too enthusiastic about museums. Theatres are another big attraction in Hamburg and the sheer number of theatres means that you will find a performance which interests you, whether your tastes are very conservative or they are avant garde. Fantastic food, excellent shopping and a really excellent nightlife makes this the ideal destination for all, whatever the time of year, because there is always something going on and getting to Hamburg is also quite easy, since it has its own airport. Flight operators include EasyJet, Flybe and British Airways.
